Performance Outcome: Develops a viable, manageable, and responsible plan of action supported by the mathematics; and consistent with the argument, conclusion, or decision.
For my Sophomore Algebra II class, we were tasked with recreating a package design to be more efficient. My group and I picked a package to evaluate, and we found that there is a lot of empty space in Nature Valley granola bars. The extra space in the package was costing the company an excess amount of money since it costs more to create a bigger box. We redesigned the packaging to fit all of the granola bars in the package using the least amount of cardboard. From redesigning the package, we reduced the amount of empty space from 55 percent to zero percent, by changing the dimensions. The amount of space the granola bars take up is 364.5 cm^3, while the original box has a volume of 810 cm^3. The original packaging uses 836.4 cm^2 of cardboard for the box, while the new one we designed uses 312 cm^2. Making a package smaller reduced the amount of material used, which reduces the manufacturing cost because the company does not have to buy as much material. With the amount of cardboard it takes to make one of the original boxes, you could make almost three of the new packages we designed. |
