As a Sophomore in AGS, "idea books" are a major part of our curriculum. We have 5 idea books, or 500 word essays from a given prompt, due every 6 weeks, one for each core class and one self-directed. The purpose for this assignment is for students to form an opinion on a topic and further explore that opinion. The prompts are often be related to a unit we are working on in school.
Writing Idea Books fall under many of the AGS Pillars, but for me I feel it falls most under investigate the world. The reason for this being that most of the prompts require further research and urges students to gain new knowledge about a particular topic. The idea is to think globally and outside of our comfort zone. This especially applies to the self-directed prompt, as the requirement is that it has to apply worldwide- through writing, I have learned a lot about the specific topics and current events worldwide that if I had not been assigned, I never would have researched. I have become strong in formulating opinions and my writing has greatly improved through this.
